What is qr code location tracking?

READ. 4 MIN

QR code location tracking tells you the approximate city and country of each scan. It is derived from the scanner network address, not from the phone GPS, and it does not identify the person behind the scan.

When someone scans your dynamic code, their browser reaches our server before being redirected to your destination. At that moment the server reads the public IP address of the request and looks it up in a geolocation database. That database returns an approximate city and country. Those two fields, plus the timestamp, are what you see in your scan log.

That is the entire dataset. No name, no email, no phone number, no device fingerprint, no precise GPS coordinate. Location accuracy is at the city and country level. Sometimes the result reflects the nearest internet gateway rather than the exact scan point, especially on mobile networks, but for campaign geography that is the right level of detail.

Honesty matters here. Qr code location tracking is not GPS. Users never see a permission prompt because no browser permission is requested. The tracking happens at the network layer, the same way any web analytics product estimates visitor geography. You get a map of where your campaign travels without asking anyone to share their device location.

02 / HOW

Three steps from scan to geography.

STEP
01

Scan event

Someone scans your dynamic QR code. Their browser requests the short URL from our server.

STEP
02

IP lookup

The server resolves the public IP into an approximate city and country before redirecting to your destination.

STEP
03

Log entry

City, country and timestamp are stored against that scan. View the full history in your dashboard any time.

03 / CAPABILITIES

What location tracking records.

F.01

City detection

Approximate city of the scan based on the public IP address of the request.

F.02

Country detection

ISO country code and country name for every scan, reliable even on mobile networks.

F.03

Timestamp

Date and time of the scan recorded alongside the geography fields.

F.04

Anonymous by design

No names, no emails, no device identifiers. Scanners stay anonymous end to end.

F.05

No app, no prompt

Tracking happens at the network layer. No permission dialog appears on the scanner device.

F.06

Global coverage

Geolocation works worldwide wherever the scanner has an internet connection.

04 / USE CASES

Where geography changes decisions.

U.01

Regional campaigns

Compare scan volume by city to see which regions respond to your print material and which need another push.

U.02

Targeting effectiveness

Check whether a campaign printed for a specific city is actually being scanned there, or whether the code is travelling elsewhere.

U.03

Nonprofit donor geography

Nonprofits can see which countries and cities engage with a fundraising code and plan outreach based on real traction.

U.04

Event and venue analysis

A code placed at a venue shows how far attendees travelled to reach it based on the cities that appear in the scan log.

05 / FAQ

Questions.

Straight answers on accuracy, privacy and coverage.

Q.01

Is this GPS?

No. Location is derived from the scanner IP address at the network level, not from the phone GPS. No permission prompt is shown.

Q.02

How accurate is it?

Accuracy is at the city and country level. IP geolocation is approximate and may reflect the nearest network gateway.

Q.03

Can I see names or personal details?

No. Scanners are anonymous. Only city, country and timestamp are recorded, never names or emails.

Q.04

Is it GDPR compliant?

Because no personal data is stored, the tracking is built with privacy in mind. You remain responsible for your own disclosures where required.

Q.05

Does it work worldwide?

Yes. IP geolocation returns city and country for scans from any country on the public internet.
